How to Hire a Finish Carpenter in Jacksonville (Without Getting Burned) in Northeast Florida, Jacksonville, FL

Why a finish carpenter is writing this

A finish carpentry company publishing a guide on how to hire one, bad ones included. Strange, maybe. But we'd genuinely rather you hire the right carpenter than the cheapest one, even on the days that isn't us. A built-in done badly hangs on your wall and reminds you every single day, and it sours people on custom work altogether. So here's the honest version of what to look for, written by people who do this work every day across Jacksonville and St. Johns County.

First: custom millwork vs. prefab

Before you hire anyone, know what you're actually buying. People use "built-ins" for two very different things.

Prefab or big-box cabinetry comes out of a factory in standard sizes, then gets assembled and trimmed out on site. Faster. Cheaper. For some projects, a perfectly reasonable choice. But know the trade-offs. Standard dimensions rarely fit a real room exactly, so you end up with filler strips and gaps. A lot of the material is particleboard wearing a printed surface. And it will always read as furniture set against a wall, not part of the house.

True custom millwork is measured to your room and built for it. Scribed to your walls. Matched to your ceiling height. Fit around your arches and outlets. It costs more, and it takes a skilled hand to do well. But that's the difference between a cabinet sitting in your home and one built into your home. If you've ever seen a built-in that looks like it was always there, that's custom work.

Neither is wrong. Just know which one you're paying for, and make sure the quote matches the expectation.

"Licensed and insured": what it should actually mean

Almost everyone says it. Fewer can show it. In Florida, you want a carpenter who hands you proof of liability insurance before any work begins, not after you ask twice. Insurance protects your home if something goes wrong on the job. That's the entire point of it. We hand over documentation up front, every job, as a matter of course, because letting a stranger work in your home on his word alone isn't a fair position to put you in.

Ask for it. A real professional will be glad you did.

Red flags worth walking away from

Most problems show up before the first cut, if you know what to listen for.

Vague pricing. "We'll figure out the final cost as we go" is how budgets get blown. You want one clear price for a clearly defined scope, agreed before anyone picks up a saw.

A large up-front deposit. A reasonable deposit at signing is normal. Being asked for most of the money before the work is done is not. We take a standard deposit, and the balance only comes due after the project is finished and you're satisfied. That structure keeps everyone honest.

No portfolio of real, finished work. Renderings and stock photos are not a track record. You want actual projects in actual homes. Ours are on our portfolio and written up one by one in our project journal.

No reviews, or reviews they can't point you to. Real reputations hold up when you go check. You can read ours on our testimonials page and on Google.

Pressure. "This price is only good today" is a sales tactic, not a quote. Good work sells itself. It doesn't need a countdown.

Questions to ask before you sign

Bring these to any consultation. The answers tell you plenty.

  • Is this custom-built for my space, or assembled from stock cabinetry?
  • Can I see your insurance documentation before work begins?
  • Is the price all-in, or are there costs that could show up later?
  • How do you handle matching my existing trim, stain, or cabinetry?
  • What's the payment schedule, and when is the balance due?
  • Can I see a finished project like mine, and talk to that homeowner?
  • Who is actually doing the work in my home?

How we try to earn it

The way we run a project is built to answer most of those questions before you have to ask. We come to your home, measure, and listen to what you're after. You get one all-in price. No surprises. We show our license and insurance up front, and the final balance isn't due until the work is done and you're happy with it. The whole sequence is laid out on our process page.

We also take on a limited number of projects at a time, on purpose. It's the only way to hold the standard we want to hold. That's just how we do things. If that's the kind of working relationship you're after, request a consultation and we'll talk through your project.

Tell us what you want built.

We'll tell you if it's a fit. We take a limited number of projects and respond within 24 hours.
