A built-in is the difference between furniture you place in a room and architecture that belongs to it. Done right, a wall of cabinetry or a flanking pair of bookcases looks like it was framed with the house: scribed to the wall, level across an uneven floor, and finished so the seams disappear. That is finish carpentry, not flat-pack assembly, and it is the work we do every day.

We build built-ins for the awkward and the ambitious alike, the dead space beside a fireplace, the blank wall in a family room, a window seat with drawers below, a reading nook lined in shelving. We plan the proportions to the room, integrate lighting and concealed storage where it helps, and paint or stain everything in place so the result reads as one intentional piece.

A custom built-in is cabinetry or shelving constructed and finished to fit a specific space in your home, rather than freestanding furniture. AVP builds bookcases, fireplace surrounds, window seats, and full storage walls on-site so they sit flush to the wall and finish into your existing trim.

Are built-ins worth it compared to freestanding furniture?

Built-ins use space a bookcase or cabinet cannot, integrate with your trim so they look original to the home, and tend to add more perceived value because buyers read them as part of the architecture. They are a fixed, finished feature rather than something that leaves a gap behind it.

Can you build a built-in around an existing fireplace or window?

Yes. Built-ins around fireplaces and flanking windows are among our most-requested projects. We measure and build on-site so the cabinetry fits your exact opening and the finish matches the surrounding trim.

How long does a built-in take to build?

Most built-ins are built and finished on-site in two to five days depending on the size and the amount of cabinetry. We give you a firm timeline and one all-in price at your in-home consultation.
