Accent wall
Board and Batten Staircase Accent Wall in Orange Park, FL | AVP Construction JAX

The Project
This one is in Orange Park, Florida, right here in 32065. The homeowners had a grand staircase with a massive wall running alongside it. Tall ceiling height. Dramatic angle. And a completely flat, builder-beige surface that was wasting every inch of it.
They wanted a board-and-batten accent wall going up that staircase wall. A three-column by four-row grid. Deep black. The kind of thing that stops you when you hit the bottom step.

We measured that wall at 158 and three-quarter inches tall by 82 inches wide. Big surface. Big opportunity. We took it seriously.
The Challenge
Scale. That is the whole story here.

Working a staircase wall means you are never standing flat on a level floor with the wall right in front of you. The ground drops away under you as the wall climbs. Every measurement, every nail, every piece of trim gets placed from an awkward angle with a ladder repositioned constantly. Getting a twelve-panel grid to read symmetrical from the bottom of the stairs, where the eye actually lands, takes more layout time than most people expect.
The before photos show exactly what we were starting with. Flat. Plain. Nothing. A wall that size deserved better.

The Build
We laid the whole grid out before touching a single nail gun. Spacing matters more on a staircase wall than anywhere else because the viewer sees it from below on an angle, and any row that is even slightly off reads wrong immediately.

The trim pieces went up in a three-column, four-row grid. Perimeter frame first, then the interior horizontals, then the verticals. Each intersection gets nailed and glued. You can see in the during photos the tape holding intersections tight while the adhesive set, which is exactly how you get crisp, flat joints that do not open up six months later when the Florida humidity does its thing.

We caulk every nail hole twice. The first coat of paint shrinks the caulk into the hole, and if you stop there, you see every single fastener point under the final color. The cheap approach is one pass and done. We come back for the second pass every time.

Same goes for every joint where trim meets trim and where trim meets wall. A hairline gap on a deep black wall is visible from ten feet away. You seal it, paint it, check it, seal it again if needed. That is just how we do things.

Then came the color. Sherwin-Williams Tricorn Black in a matte finish. No sheen. No reflection. Pure depth. The moment the first coat went on, the grid went from architectural detail to focal point. You can see it in the during photos where the paint is on but the tape is still up: the wall already has presence before it is even finished.

The matte finish was the right call. Satin or eggshell would have bounced light around and softened the look. Matte absorbs it. The grid reads as shadow and dimension rather than just painted trim, and on a surface this tall, that depth is everything.

The Result
Walk up to that staircase now and you feel it before you process it. Dark. Bold. A grid that draws your eye upward along the full height of the wall. The black plays directly off the existing black iron balusters and handrail, so it looks like it was always meant to be there.

No base. No bulk. No decorative clutter. Just clean geometry in Tricorn Black running floor to ceiling alongside a grand staircase in Orange Park.

Not all accent walls are created equal. A staircase wall this size, done wrong, looks uneven and cheap. Done right, it anchors the entire upstairs landing and makes every part of that floor feel more intentional. This one is done right. 🔥
