The Project

Sometimes the best office is one nobody knows is there. That was exactly the vision for this Mill Creek Forest homeowner in St. John's, Florida — a fully custom built-in office that could handle serious work during the day and then close up completely, hiding every trace of the workspace behind a wall of beautiful cabinetry doors. AVP Construction JAX designed and built the entire unit from scratch: floor-to-ceiling storage towers, a built-in workbench, banks of soft-close drawers, and shaker-style cabinet doors finished in a striking custom slate-blue color with matte black hardware throughout.

The finished result, seen from the doorway, looks more like a dramatic piece of furniture than a working office — which was exactly the point. When those doors swing shut, the workday disappears.

The Challenge

The goal here wasn't just to build storage — it was to build a secret. Every shelf, drawer stack, and open cubby had to be planned so that a set of cabinet doors could close over the entire workspace and leave the room looking like a finished, residential space rather than a home office. That meant carefully coordinating the depth of the workbench, the placement of the upper cabinet openings, and the swing clearance of every door panel so nothing would catch, gap, or look out of place when closed.

As you can see in the before photo, this room started as a completely blank wall — just smooth drywall, baseboard, and a single outlet. There was nothing to work with and everything to build. Getting a built-in of this scale to feel like it was always meant to be there requires careful planning before a single piece of plywood is cut.

The Build

The first step was fabricating the cabinet carcasses off-site. You can see one of the lower base units assembled and sitting in the driveway in the early build photo — solid plywood construction with clean, square compartments ready to receive face frames and hardware. Building the boxes outside kept the workspace tidy and let us verify square and dimension before anything went into the room.

Back inside, the base cabinets were positioned along the wall and shimmed level across the tile floor. In this staging photo you can see the full footprint taking shape — a taller narrow tower to the left, the wide central base units in the middle, and a shorter tower to the right — all with their open cubbies oriented so they'd nest together seamlessly once joined and trimmed.

Once the bases were set and secured, we started building upward. The upper cabinet structure was built in place and tied into the wall framing, giving the whole unit the structural integrity of a true built-in rather than a piece of furniture sitting against a wall. This photo shows the framework rising to nearly ceiling height, with the central TV-niche-style opening designated for the workbench area and open display shelves flanking it on both sides.

With the bones complete, we moved into priming and the first rounds of finish work. You can see in this photo that the upper structure is fully assembled and primed bright white — every shelf, divider, and column clean and tight. The matte black European-style hinges are already mounted on the right tower, ready to accept the shaker door panels. Crown and trim details were fitted at the ceiling line to give the unit a true built-in look with no gap between cabinet top and ceiling.

This detail shot from mid-build shows the doorway side of the unit with the French door open into the adjacent living space — a good reminder of how this room sits just off the main living area of the home. Keeping the job site protected while working in an occupied house was a priority throughout, and you can see the drop cloths in place across the tile floor.

The Result

The transformation is remarkable. Every surface was painted in a deep custom slate-blue-green — a bold, moody color that makes the millwork feel intentional and design-forward rather than builder-grade. The matte black cabinet pulls and hinges tie directly into the room's hardware finishes, and the shaker door profiles give the piece a clean, transitional style that fits right in with the aesthetic of Mill Creek Forest homes.

The workbench sits at the center of the unit with drawer stacks on both sides — all soft-close, all built to take daily use. Open shelving in the upper section gives the homeowner easy access to frequently used items, while the large cabinet doors above swing shut to conceal the whole working surface when the day is done.
