Custom Built-In Office with Hidden Workbench in Mill Creek Forest, St. John's Florida

The Project

Sometimes the best office is the one nobody knows is there. That was the whole idea for this Mill Creek Forest homeowner in St. John's, Florida. A fully custom built-in office that handles serious work during the day, then closes up completely and hides every trace of the workspace behind a wall of cabinet doors. We designed and built the entire unit from scratch: floor-to-ceiling storage towers, a built-in workbench, banks of soft-close drawers, and shaker-style doors finished in a custom slate-blue with matte black hardware throughout.

From the doorway it reads like a piece of considered furniture, not a working office. Which was exactly the point. Those doors swing shut and the workday disappears.

The Challenge

The goal here was a secret, not a storage wall. Every shelf, drawer stack, and open cubby had to be planned so a set of cabinet doors could close over the entire workspace and leave the room looking finished and residential instead of like a home office. That meant coordinating the workbench depth, the placement of the upper cabinet openings, and the swing clearance of every single door panel so nothing would catch, gap, or look out of place when closed.

As the before photo shows, this room started as a completely blank wall. Smooth drywall, baseboard, a single outlet. Nothing to work with and everything to build. Getting a built-in of this scale to sit like it was always meant to be there takes real planning before a single sheet of plywood gets cut.

The Build

We fabricated the cabinet carcasses off-site first. The early build photo shows one of the lower base units assembled in the driveway: solid plywood construction, clean square compartments ready for face frames and hardware. Building the boxes outside kept the work tidy and let us verify square and dimension before anything moved into the room.

Back inside, the base cabinets went along the wall and got shimmed level across the tile floor. This staging photo shows the full footprint taking shape. A taller narrow tower on the left, the wide central base units in the middle, a shorter tower on the right, all with their open cubbies lined up to nest together clean once joined and trimmed.

Once the bases were set and secured, we built upward. The upper cabinet structure was built in place and tied into the wall framing. That gives the whole unit the structural integrity of a true built-in instead of a piece of furniture leaning against a wall. This photo shows the framework rising to nearly ceiling height, with the central opening reserved for the workbench and open display shelves flanking it on both sides.

With the bones complete, we moved into priming and the first rounds of finish work. The upper structure is fully assembled and primed white here. Every shelf, divider, and column clean and tight. The matte black European-style hinges are already mounted on the right tower, waiting for the shaker door panels. Crown and trim details went in at the ceiling line to close the gap and give the unit the look of something original to the home.

This mid-build detail shot shows the doorway side of the unit with the French door open into the adjacent living space. A good reminder of how this room sits right off the main living area. Keeping the job site protected while working in an occupied house was a priority the whole way through, and the drop cloths across that tile floor stayed down the entire time.

The Result

Every surface got painted in a deep custom slate-blue-green. Bold and moody, and it makes the millwork feel deliberate instead of builder-grade. The matte black pulls and hinges tie straight into the room's existing hardware, and the shaker door profiles give the piece a clean transitional character that fits Mill Creek Forest homes. We'll say it plainly: a strong paint color is a commitment. This one earned it.

The workbench sits at the center of the unit with drawer stacks on both sides. All soft-close. All built to take daily use. Open shelving in the upper section keeps the everyday stuff within reach, and the large cabinet doors above swing shut to hide the entire working surface when the day is done. From the hallway, there's no sign an office is behind those doors.
