Custom French Door Installation for Home Office Privacy — Seabrook Village, Nocatee FL — Seabrook Village, Nocatee, FL

The Project

When a homeowner in Seabrook Village, Nocatee reached out to us again, we were genuinely glad to hear from him. We'd already built him a custom TV entertainment center — you can see Tyler's thoughts on that project below — and now he had a new challenge: his dedicated home office space looked stunning, but it was wide open to the rest of the house. Every sound, every distraction from the living areas drifted right in.

The solution was a pair of custom French doors between the office and the main hallway, plus a single matching glass door on the opposite side where the office opens toward the kitchen. Both entries needed to feel deliberate and refined — not like an afterthought — so we built every door panel in our Jacksonville shop before a single nail went into the wall.

The Challenge

The existing openings told the story clearly. In the before photos you can see two plain, unframed pass-throughs cut into deep navy walls — one leading from the office into the hallway corridor and another narrow opening toward the kitchen side. Both were bare drywall edges with no casing, no header detail, and no door at all. The homeowner had been living with fully open entries in a space he needed to actually work in.

Fitting full French doors into existing openings isn't as simple as buying a pre-hung unit off a shelf. The rough openings had to be evaluated, the header heights confirmed, and casing profiles chosen that would complement the home's existing millwork — including the handsome board-and-batten wainscoting already installed in the entry foyer visible just through the opening. Getting all of that to read as one cohesive design, across multiple doorways, takes planning before the first piece of trim is cut.

The Build

We started by carefully stripping out the old door casings and prepping each rough opening — you can see the drywall patching already underway at the top of the hallway opening in the during photo, with drop cloths down and the home's furniture wrapped tight to protect it. All three of the homeowner's spaces — the office, the foyer, and the butler's pantry hallway — were protected while we worked.

The doors themselves were built and primed at our shop. Each panel features a classic 15-lite divided-light design — fifteen individual glass panes set into a crisp white painted frame. In the shop photos you can see the panels laid out on our work tables: the grid of muntins is sharp and uniform, the stiles and rails are tight, and the primer coat is applied evenly across the face before the doors ever leave our facility. Building them in a controlled shop environment means every joint is square and every surface is prep-sanded before the final finish coat goes on.

Back on-site, we set the French door pair into the main office opening. In the during installation photo you can see both leaves temporarily positioned in the opening — the raw pine frames not yet painted, the header drywall freshly mudded, and the interior of the foyer's board-and-batten wall visible straight through. At this stage we're checking swing clearance, confirming the reveal is even on all sides, and making sure both leaves close flush against each other before any finish work begins.

Once the doors were hung and hardware was confirmed, we fitted the full casing package — flat head casing with a clean backband profile on both faces of each opening, plus a simple but substantial head surround that grounds the door visually against the wall. The same treatment was carried through to the single-door opening on the kitchen side, so both entries read as a matched set even though they're in different parts of the home. Every piece of trim was caulked, filled, and painted out to a smooth finish.

The Result

The finished French door installation completely transformed how the office functions and how it looks. In the after photo from inside the office you can see both 15-lite leaves closed, their white painted frames popping against the deep navy walls, the dramatic wire chandelier overhead, and the warm walnut desk in the foreground — the room finally reads as a proper, intentional space.

From the Seabrook Village hallway side, the view is equally clean. The board-and-batten wainscoting in the foyer lines up beautifully with the white door casing, and the glass lites let light pass between the rooms without sacrificing the acoustic separation the homeowner needed. The crown molding, the wainscoting, and the new door surround all feel like they were planned together from day one.

The single door on the kitchen-corridor side is equally polished. Looking down the narrow butler's pantry hallway, the 15-lite single door with its matching casing and head detail frames the moody office beyond — the chandelier glowing through the glass, the dark cabinetry on either side. It's a small opening that now makes a real architectural statement.

This homeowner trusted us twice now with the spaces he cares most about in his Nocatee home, and that means a lot. Tyler's been generous in sharing his experience — here's what he had to say after our first project together:

The same care that went into his entertainment center went into every miter cut, every pane of glass, and every inch of painted casing on this custom finish carpentry project. The result is a home office in Seabrook Village that finally lives up to the rest of this beautifully designed St. Johns County home.
