Dry Bars
Custom Garage Bar Cabinet with Hidden Water Filtration — Tamaya, Jacksonville FL

The Project
When this Tamaya homeowner reached out, he didn't need much convincing. His garage was already a fully committed man cave — chalkboard beer art covering the walls, a row of classic pinball machines along one side, and a vibe that was clearly years in the making. What he did need was a way to bring the same level of intention to a dead corner of that garage where a water filtration system and its salt tank sat completely exposed, squeezed between the garage door track and an Addams Family pinball machine.
The ask: build a custom cabinet enclosure to hide the filtration equipment, integrate a beverage cooler he already owned, and add glass-front upper cabinets with enough character to fit the rest of the space. This is exactly the kind of project AVP Construction JAX was built for — functional custom bar cabinetry that looks like it belongs.

The Challenge
That before photo tells the whole story. You can actually see the measurement annotations drawn right on the wall — 84 inches tall, 42 inches wide, the filtration tank sitting at 58 inches high with its control head and plumbing jutting out at an awkward angle, and the salt tank sitting beside it. The available footprint was tight: bordered on the left by the garage door track hardware and on the right by the pinball machine, with just 42 inches of clearance to work with at the widest point.
The real puzzle was building around live plumbing and electrical connections attached to the filtration system without cutting off service access. The cabinet had to enclose the equipment cleanly while still allowing a homeowner to reach in and service the system when needed. On top of that, we needed to carve out a precise opening for the customer-supplied beverage cooler — an appliance with its own specific cutout requirements — and make it look intentional rather than like an afterthought. In a Duval County garage that gets Florida heat, fit and finish had to be tight from the start.
The Build
Everything on this project was built from scratch in our Jacksonville shop. We started by building the carcass — a full-height enclosure finished in a deep matte charcoal that would hold its own against the dark, moody tone of the rest of the man cave. In the early stages, you can see the raw plywood cabinet body set in place around the filtration system, confirming our measurements and checking clearances before any doors were hung.

Back at the shop, our team got to work on the shaker-style cabinet doors. The workbench photo shows a full spread of MDF door frames at various stages — rail-and-stile components laid out, panels fitted, everything sized for this specific enclosure. Every door on this project was built by hand, not pulled from a catalog.

Here's the AVP craftsman holding up a freshly routed shaker door frame straight off the table saw — you can see the clean profile on the inside edge and the MDF panel ready to drop in. That level of in-house fabrication is what allows us to match exact dimensions rather than forcing the design to fit a standard size.

Once the frames were assembled, the doors went into the spray booth for their finish coats. The photo of the doors hanging to dry shows the deep, even black that came out of that process — a smooth, consistent matte finish with no brush marks. The upper doors got glass panes installed in their frames, while the lower doors remained solid panel for a clean contrast.

Back on site in Tamaya, the full cabinet body went up and the beverage cooler opening was framed out. This mid-install shot shows exactly how the enclosure wraps the filtration system — the tall cylindrical tank sits in its own compartment with clearance for the control head, the salt tank has its own lower bay, and the cooler cutout is positioned in the middle tier for easy access. The whole thing is anchored to the wall and level, despite the floor not being perfectly flat.

The Result
The finished cabinet is a genuine show-stopper in a garage that already had a lot going on. The deep charcoal finish ties directly into the dark aesthetic of the space, and the gold bar-pull hardware gives it just enough warmth to keep it from feeling industrial. The upper glass-front doors are lit from inside with blue LED strip lighting — and we backed those upper compartments with a mirror panel, which adds depth and makes the whole display section feel like a proper bar display rather than a utility cabinet.

From the side angle inside the garage, you can appreciate how seamlessly the cabinet reads against the wall. The beverage cooler sits flush in its dedicated opening, framed by solid panel doors above and below. The blue glow from the upper glass cabinets plays off the rest of the man cave lighting beautifully.

Step back and the full picture comes into focus — this cabinet now anchors the corner of the garage the same way a built-in bar anchors a finished basement. The water filtration system is completely invisible. The pinball machine beside it, the chalkboard beer wall opposite, and this custom cabinet all feel like they were planned together from day one. Nobody walking into this Tamaya man cave would ever guess there's a whole water treatment system hiding behind those doors.
