The Project

Wire shelving gets the job done. Barely. This family in Mill Creek, St. John's, Florida was done with it. They wanted a pantry that actually worked. Base cabinets below, a stained butcher block counter running the full L-wrap, and solid floating shelves above. White painted. Clean. Purpose-built storage that looks like it belongs in the rest of the house.

We came in and built exactly that.

The before photo says it all. Wire racks on every wall, stuff piled wherever it fit, no real system. Functional in the loosest sense of the word. The homeowners knew they could do better.

The Challenge

No major curveballs on this one. The space itself was a good-sized walk-in pantry. Enough room to do an L-shaped layout properly without feeling cramped. The challenge was purely in the design execution: getting the base cabinets, butcher block, and floating shelves to read as one cohesive built-in unit instead of three separate things slapped together.

That's harder than it sounds. The shelves have to sit at the right height relative to the counter. The counter has to be level across a full L-wrap. And the finish has to be consistent wall to wall or the whole thing falls apart visually.

The Build

We started with the base cabinets. White shaker-style boxes set in an L-configuration to hug two walls of the pantry. You can see them going in here. Doors hung, hardware rough-positioned, the whole run locked in level before anything else happened.

Shaker profile on every door. Matte black hardware. Clean and consistent all the way around. Nothing fussy.

On top of the cabinets we laid a butcher block counter, stained dark. The contrast against the white cabinet faces is exactly what the homeowners were after. You can see in the during shots how the raw butcher block looked as we were fitting it. Light wood tone, tight grain, L-shaped to match the cabinet run below.

Getting the L-corner on butcher block right matters. A bad miter there looks cheap and catches your eye every time you walk in. We took the time to fit it correctly.

Then came the floating shelves. We built and installed three shelves running the full L-wrap above the counter, framing the space wall to wall. The ledgers are secured into studs. These shelves are not moving. No decorative brackets, no visible hardware. Just clean shelf faces painted out.

All of it went up in Sherwin-Williams Pure White Emerald Urethane. That paint matters. Emerald Urethane cures hard. It's the same finish chemistry used on cabinetry because it holds up to cleaning, oils, and humidity without yellowing or chalking. A lot of guys just grab whatever white latex is on the shelf. We don't do that in a pantry. It gets touched constantly, wiped down, things get slid across those shelves. You want a surface that lasts.

Every nail hole got caulked and sanded before paint. Then caulked again after the first coat, because paint shrinks the filler and the cheap guys never come back for that second pass. We do. That's the difference between a shelf that looks built-in and one that just looks installed.

The Result

Same square footage. Completely different pantry.

Base cabinets running the full L. Dark butcher block counter sitting on top. Three white floating shelves above that, wrapping both walls. Matte black hinges on the door. One overhead light hitting all of it. No wire. No clutter. Just real storage that looks like it was always supposed to be there.

This is what happens when you stop settling for builder-grade solutions and actually build something. The homeowners in Mill Creek get a pantry that works the way a pantry should. And one they're not embarrassed to open the door on.
