Designer Grid Accent Wall & Wainscoting in Forest Trails, Jacksonville FL

The Project

Some rooms have all the right bones. Good light, generous square footage, quality finishes. And then one wall that just sits there doing nothing. That was this Forest Trails home in Jacksonville, Florida. The homeowner had a long, wide living and dining space with a sweeping wall stretching across the entire room, and it needed something with weight and intention behind it.

He already knew what he wanted. He'd been scrolling through our portfolio, landed on a grid-style panel accent wall, and that was that. Our job at AVP Construction JAX was to take that reference and scale it to his room. Floor to ceiling. Wall to wall.

The before photo tells it plainly. A clean but completely flat gray wall running the length of a long hallway and living area. Decent baseboards. Recessed lighting above. And nothing to give the room structure or a sense of arrival. Just empty drywall.

The Challenge

The real puzzle here was scale. This wasn't a single accent wall behind a sofa. It was an entire side of a home, running continuously from the living room through into the dining area. For the panels to read as intentional and architectural at every point along that run, the layout work had to be right before a single piece of trim went up.

This reference shot from our portfolio shows exactly the design language the homeowner wanted: bold grid paneling with a double-trim detail at the intersections. Two parallel moldings cross to form a crisp X at every grid joint. That layered detail takes patience and precise mitering. Cut it sloppy and it reads as DIY. Cut it right and the wall looks like it was always meant to be there.

The Build

We started by laying out the full grid pattern across the wall, mapping the vertical and horizontal runs of trim so the panels would sit in balanced proportions from baseboard to crown. The design uses wide rectangular panels divided by a distinctive double-molding detail, two parallel strips running side by side. That pairing creates a shadow line and gives the wall real depth without adding bulk.

Here the trim is fully installed and the grid is locked in before final paint. Every vertical and horizontal strip is seated tight to the wall. The double-rail detail runs clean at the mid-wall horizontal break and again at the top rail near the ceiling. Columns evenly spaced. Intersections aligned. Baseboard worked into the lower panel row like it grew there.

With all the trim set, we masked off the entire space, floor to ceiling, plastic sheeting on every adjacent surface, and our painter worked the wall with a spray gun. Spraying the trim and the wall field in the same tone is what gives this design its architectural quality. No harsh contrast between the molding and the flat. Just shadow and profile doing the work. You can see him working his way down the hallway section, fully suited up, hitting every profile evenly for a smooth, consistent finish.

The Result

Walking into this room after completion is a different experience than before. The grid panel wall now anchors the entire living and dining space in Forest Trails, and it gives the home the kind of character you expect from serious architectural millwork.

From the dining area, glass-top table and dark chairs in the foreground, the accent wall reads as one cohesive architectural element. The recessed lighting washes across the paneled surface and catches the edge of every trim strip. Considered, not fussy.

Straight on, you see how balanced the proportions really are. Four large panel columns. The double-rail horizontal detail running at mid-height and again near the top. Crisp white baseboard anchoring the bottom. It all holds together as one composition across what used to be a blank stretch of flat drywall.

The hallway perspective shows just how far this treatment runs. The paneling carries all the way down the corridor, so even the transitional spaces of this Jacksonville home feel designed on purpose. The light wood-look flooring plays well against the warm gray wall tone.

Every door casing, outlet cover, and corner termination was worked cleanly into the design. Nothing here was an afterthought. That's the difference between trim that looks built-in and trim that looks applied.
