Laundry Room Butcher Block Install in Southside Jacksonville

The Project

This was one piece of a larger laundry room remodel in Southside, Jacksonville. Our part: supply and install a butcher block countertop spanning the full width of the washer and dryer. Sixty-four inches wide, thirty-four inches deep. The homeowners picked every detail themselves, down to the exact stain.

That countertop is the kind of thing that changes how a laundry room feels. Folding clothes on top of a machine is a chore. Folding on a solid wood surface that looks this good is something else entirely.

The Challenge

The install had to land perfectly level across two front-load machines sitting side by side. Washers and dryers are not perfectly flat surfaces. They have lips, control panels, and subtle height differences machine to machine. You use a laser level, you check every corner, and you don't call it done until the slab sits without any rock.

Getting the countertop to clear the control panels without sitting too high relative to the upper cabinets took real attention. Millimeter decisions that nobody notices when they're right. They notice when they're wrong.

The Build

The butcher block itself came in raw. That's where our prep work starts. The customer called for English chestnut, oil-based Minwax. That's a dark, warm brown with real depth to it. Oil-based stain penetrates differently than water-based. It takes longer to cure, but the color goes in deeper and stays richer long-term. We let it fully absorb before touching it again.

After the stain, a satin clear coat. Not gloss. Satin gives you protection without looking like plastic. On a surface that's going to see detergent bottles, folded laundry, and daily use, that clear coat is not optional.

We fitted the slab across both machines and locked it in place. The front edge overhangs just enough to look intentional. The back wall clearance was tight. We scribed it clean. No gaps, no filler caulk doing the work that a precise cut should do. The dryer plug and supply lines for the washer stayed fully accessible behind the units. We planned around them from the start.

The Result

Those dark shaker cabinets overhead, the black Samsung front-loaders below, and now this English chestnut butcher block sitting right across the middle. The warm wood tone breaks up all that dark and makes the whole room feel designed instead of assembled. It looks like it was always supposed to be there.

Sixty-four inches of solid wood countertop, dead level, sealed, and ready for decades of use. That's what this Southside Jacksonville laundry room got.
