Shiplap Ceiling Installation in a Ponte Vedra Beach Master Bedroom

Shiplap Ceiling Installation in a Ponte Vedra Beach Master Bedroom in Ponte Vedra Beach, Ponte Vedra Beach, FL

The Project

This master bedroom in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida had real bones. High ceilings, big black-framed sliding glass doors, a dramatic marble-look accent wall already in place. The homeowners had a vision for the space and the ceiling was the centerpiece of it.

The ask: cover the entire angled ceiling plane with white shiplap. Not a flat box. Not a simple drop. A full installation that followed the geometry of the existing ceiling. Angles, transitions, and all. With tight seams and a painted finish that reads as one continuous surface.

Before

In the before photo you can see exactly what we started with. Clean drywall, a ceiling fan, a handful of recessed lights, and a lot of flat nothing. All that height, doing zero work for the room.

The Challenge

The ceiling geometry was the first thing I noticed on the walk-through. This is not a standard flat plane or a simple cathedral pitch. The ceiling has multiple angled faces meeting at compound angles. Think a faceted geometric form overhead, not a single slope. Every board transition had to be mitered precisely. One degree off and you see it from the floor.

The seams were the other concern. The homeowners were clear: they wanted this to look flawless. No gaps telegraphing through the paint. No joints that catch the light wrong. That means the shiplap boards need to be dead-straight, edge to edge, with every nail hole filled and caulked. Then painted. Then inspected. We use seven-inch actual-width boards for a reason. They're wide enough to read as planks but still manageable overhead at height without bowing mid-run.

Working overhead on scaffolding with compound angles means every cut happens twice in your head before it happens on the saw. You calculate the angle, account for the plane shift, then verify against the ceiling geometry before you touch the nailer. There's no room to guess at ceiling height on a job like this.

The Build

We set up full scaffolding. You can see the yellow Metaltech rigs in the during photos, staged across the room. There's no way to do this job right from a ladder. You need to be up there, stable, with both hands free and a nailer at arm's reach.

Here the crew is fitting boards directly overhead. Nailer in hand, scaffolding platform solid underfoot. Each board on the angled field planes ran vertically up the pitch, which means we were cutting every board to land precisely on the framing while keeping the reveal lines consistent. The recessed light rough-ins were already in place, so we had to cut around each one cleanly as we went.

In this shot you can see the full ceiling taking shape from below. Multiple plane changes, all covered in shiplap, all with consistent groove spacing. The transition lines where one face meets another are clean and sharp. No gap, no overlap, no filler cheating. That's mitered corner work, done properly.

From the room angle you can see how the shiplap wraps across the entire ceiling volume. The angled planes all read together as one surface. The scaffolding stayed up until every board was in, every hole was caulked, and the paint crew was ready to take over.

You can also see in this photo the window and door trim work happening in parallel. The white shiplap ceiling coordinates directly with the rest of the color drench scope happening throughout the room. Everything ties together.

This shot from below shows the full angular geometry of the ceiling once all the boards were in. Before final paint. Every mitered ridge line is tight. The groove pattern flows across the pitch changes without interruption. That took layout time up front. Most crews skip that step and it shows.

The Result

The finished ceiling is exactly what a room like this deserves.

Standing in the master bedroom now, the ceiling commands the room. The angled shiplap planes create real geometry overhead. Shadow lines from the grooves catching the light differently across each face. The whole thing is painted white, so it reads as a single sculptural form rather than a patchwork of boards. The fan drops from the center plane. The recessed lights sit flush. Nothing fights for attention.

From the wider angle you get the full picture: shiplap ceiling, marble-look accent wall, floor-to-ceiling black-framed glass doors opening to the backyard. The ceiling is what pulls it all together. A plain drywall surface up there would have been invisible. This one earns its place.

The groove lines run true across every plane. The seams are invisible in the paint. Every nail hole was caulked twice. Once before paint, once after the first coat dried and the filler shrank back. The cheap guys skip that second pass. We don't.

Done before the homeowners returned to Ponte Vedra Beach. That's just how we do things. 🙏
