The Project

This laundry room in Nocatee had good bones — decent-sized for a utility space, nice LVP flooring, and a pair of front-load machines that deserved better surroundings. What it was missing was everything else. The homeowner reached out to AVP Construction JAX wanting to transform a room that felt like an afterthought into a space that was genuinely organized and pleasant to be in. We built her a full custom storage system: wall-mounted shaker cabinets above the machines, a tall two-door pantry tower on the side wall, a run of floating open shelves in the corner niche, and a dedicated hanging rod for fresh-out-of-the-dryer clothes. Every piece was built and finished on site right here in St. John's County.

The Challenge

The before photos tell the story pretty clearly. In the before shot below, you can see the room in its original state: bare textured walls, a single contractor-grade wire shelf sagging over the machines, and absolutely no storage to speak of. The wall beside the machines was just empty drywall — wasted square footage in a room where every inch matters.

Working in a tight laundry room is always a puzzle. With two large front-load machines taking up the floor space and tools, cabinets, and materials all competing for the same few square feet, the crew had to be deliberate about sequencing — setting pieces in place and fitting around the machines rather than working in open air. There was also a practical request from the homeowner that we were happy to accommodate: she wanted a spot tucked inside the tall pantry cabinet to discretely house the cat litter box, keeping it completely out of sight. That kind of real-life detail is exactly what custom millwork is for.

The Build

We started by pulling out the wire shelf and doing a clean layout of the whole room. The plan called for three distinct storage zones that would work together without the space feeling crowded.

The during photo shows the cabinets already positioned and the room taking shape — the wall-hung shaker cabinet over the washer and dryer is set, and the tall pantry tower is standing on the right side wall, crown molding already landed on top. You can also see the chalk line on the wall marking the layout for the open shelving section, and the level and tools on the floor — the kind of mid-build moment where everything is starting to click into place.

The wall cabinet above the machines features classic shaker-style doors with brushed nickel bar pulls and a crown moulding top rail — a small detail that elevates it from basic cabinet to something that looks intentional and finished. It sits at a height that's easy to reach without climbing, making it practical for detergent, dryer sheets, and everyday supplies.

On the side wall, we built a floor-to-ceiling pantry tower with two sets of shaker doors — upper and lower — finished in the same soft gray as the rest of the millwork and topped with matching crown. The lower section is where the cat litter box lives now, completely hidden behind closed doors. It's a clean solution to a real problem that a lot of pet owners deal with, and in a small Nocatee home, keeping that kind of thing out of the main living areas matters.

Between the pantry tower and the machines, we built a niche of custom floating open shelves — four of them, staggered in a cascading layout that draws the eye up and makes the corner feel intentional rather than leftover. The shelves are thick-edged and solid, finished in white to match everything else. Beside them, a single wide shelf with a hanging rod underneath gives the homeowner a dedicated spot to hang clothes straight out of the dryer — no more scrambling for a hanger before wrinkles set in. It's a simple idea that makes a daily routine noticeably easier.

All the cabinetry and shelving was painted out in a clean white with a consistent sheen, tying the whole system together. The custom pantry and storage work we do across St. John's County always starts with understanding how the space is actually used — and this room is a good example of that approach paying off.

The Result

The after photos show just how much a thoughtful storage system can change a room. What was once a bare utility space with a single wire shelf is now a fully organized laundry room with a place for everything. The white shaker cabinets and floating shelves feel cohesive and intentional, and the hanging rod means clothes come out of the dryer and go straight onto a hanger — no extra steps, no wrinkles.

The tall pantry tower handles the storage that used to have nowhere to go, and the cat litter box is completely out of sight behind those lower cabinet doors.
