The Project

This laundry room in Nocatee had decent bones. A generous footprint for a utility space, LVP flooring, and a pair of front-load machines that deserved better surroundings. Everything else was missing. The homeowner reached out to AVP Construction JAX wanting a room that had always been an afterthought to actually work for them. So we built the full custom storage system: wall-mounted shaker cabinets above the machines, a tall two-door pantry tower on the side wall, a run of floating open shelves in the corner niche, and a dedicated hanging rod for clothes fresh out of the dryer. Every piece built and finished on site, right here in St. Johns County.

The Challenge

The before photos say it plainly. Bare textured walls. A single contractor-grade wire shelf sagging over the machines. No storage to speak of. The wall beside the machines was empty drywall, wasted square footage in a room where every inch matters.

A tight laundry room is always a puzzle. Two large front-load machines take up most of the floor, so the crew had to sequence the work carefully, setting pieces in place and fitting around the machines instead of working in open air. The homeowner also had one specific request we were glad to take on: a dedicated spot inside the tall pantry cabinet for the cat litter box, completely out of sight. That's the kind of real-life detail custom millwork is built around.

The Build

First thing gone was the wire shelf. Then a clean layout of the whole room. The plan called for three distinct storage zones that work together without crowding the space.

The during photo shows the cabinets positioned and the room taking shape. The wall-hung shaker cabinet over the washer and dryer is set. The tall pantry tower is standing on the right side wall, crown already landed on top. A chalk line on the wall marks the layout for the open shelving, and the level and tools on the floor mark that mid-build moment when the sequencing starts to resolve.

The wall cabinet above the machines got classic shaker-style doors, brushed nickel bar pulls, and a crown moulding top rail. Small detail, big difference. It reads as finished cabinetry instead of a floating box. And it hangs at a height that's easy to reach without climbing, practical for detergent, dryer sheets, and everyday supplies.

On the side wall we built a floor-to-ceiling pantry tower with two sets of shaker doors, upper and lower, finished in the same soft gray as the rest of the millwork and topped with matching crown. The lower section is where the cat litter box lives now, closed off behind doors. It's a clean answer to a problem plenty of pet owners deal with, and in a smaller Nocatee home, keeping that out of the main living areas is worth planning for.

Between the pantry tower and the machines, we built a niche of four custom floating shelves in a cascading layout that draws the eye up and makes the corner feel considered instead of leftover. Thick-edged and solid, finished white to match. Beside them sits a single wide shelf with a hanging rod underneath, a dedicated spot to hang clothes straight out of the dryer. One recurring frustration, off the table. All the cabinetry and shelving got painted out in a consistent white sheen that ties the system together. The Result

The after photos show what a well-planned storage system does to a room. What was bare utility space with a single wire shelf is now a fully organized laundry room with a place for everything. The white shaker cabinets and floating shelves read as one cohesive system. And the hanging rod means clothes come out of the dryer and go straight onto a hanger. No extra steps. No wrinkles.

The tall pantry tower handles the storage that used to have nowhere to go, and the cat litter box stays completely out of sight behind those lower doors. For a room that started with blank walls and builder-grade wire shelving, the difference is hard to miss.
