Board and Batten Accent Wall in a Powder Room in Rivertown, St. Johns, FL in Rivertown, St. Johns, FL

The Project

This powder room sits inside a newer home in Rivertown, one of the most thoughtfully designed communities in St. Johns, Florida. The homeowner had a clear vision: take a perfectly functional but completely bare powder room and give it real character with a board and batten accent wall. The finish was picked before we ever showed up. Sherwin-Williams Accessible Beige in the Emerald Urethane Satin formula on the lower half of the walls, bright white carrying the upper walls and trim, with wallpaper planned above once our work was done.

What made this job move fast was the homeowner's clarity. They found us on Instagram, sent a few text messages, submitted a deposit, and we were on-site within a week. No in-home consultation needed. Clear communication and a shared eye for the details make that kind of pace possible, and it's the process we aim for at AVP Construction JAX INC.

The Challenge

On paper, board and batten in a powder room sounds straightforward. In practice, every small space has its quirks. This room is compact, the kind of tight footprint where every measurement has to be dead-on because there's nowhere to hide an uneven reveal or a rail that's a hair off level. The grid of rectangular panels had to flow cleanly around the pedestal sink, the toilet, and the door casing, and tie into the existing baseboard profile without a visible seam at the transition.

Keeping the batten spacing consistent across walls of different widths, including that narrow wall behind the toilet, meant the layout work had to be done before a single piece of trim went up. The before photos show how flat and bare the room read. The goal was millwork that looks original to the home. Anything less isn't worth doing.

The Build

We started by marking the rail height and laying out the batten grid on all four walls, working the panel proportions until they felt balanced at eye level in a room that narrow. The horizontal chair rail runs continuous around the perimeter and ties every wall into one frame.

The during photos show the battens going in. Vertical and horizontal trim members nailed flat to the wall, building up the recessed-panel effect that defines the look. Drop cloths were down from the start to protect the floor. Then comes the stage where this kind of work holds or falls apart: caulk and fill. Every seam, every nail hole, every joint between new trim and existing baseboard got full attention before paint touched the walls. That's just how we do things.

Millwork tight, fills smooth, then paint. We applied Sherwin-Williams Accessible Beige in the Emerald Urethane Satin finish to the paneled lower section. Emerald Urethane earns its place in bathrooms. It's durable, it stands up to scrubbing, and it carries a light-reflecting sheen that makes the panel profiles read clearly. The upper walls above the rail stayed white, giving the homeowner the two-tone contrast they were after and leaving a clean surface ready for the wallpaper going up next.

The Result

The after photos say it plainly. The warm greige of the Accessible Beige panels sits well against the bright white trim. The crisp panel lines add real architectural depth. And the brushed gold hardware (the toilet flush lever, the towel bar, the toilet paper holder, the pedestal sink faucet) now reads as intentional against that tan warmth rather than incidental.

Looking straight into the room from the doorway, the wainscoting grid wraps every wall cleanly, and the large-format tile floor grounds the whole composition. What started as a flat, builder-grade powder room in a new St. Johns build is now the kind of space guests actually stop to look at.

The close-up overhead shot shows how sharp the panel lines are and how cleanly the Accessible Beige meets the white rail above. No bleed. No soft edges. Clean lines corner to corner. That's what the Emerald Urethane formula delivers when the prep is done right.

This is the kind of accent wall upgrade that changes how a home reads from the moment you walk in. Guests use the powder room before they see much else of the house. It's worth making it feel considered.
