Wood Slat Accent Wall on a Grand Staircase in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL

The Project

This one is right here in Ponte Vedra Beach, 32082. A custom home with a modern build. Black steel railings, light oak floors, floor-to-ceiling windows flanking the staircase. The bones were sharp. But that main staircase wall? Two stories of flat white drywall. Nothing on it. It made the whole space feel like a hotel corridor that hadn't been finished yet.

The homeowners already had a wood slat accent wall elsewhere in the house. They wanted us to match it on this grand staircase wall, running the slats vertically floor to ceiling across both levels. A tall order. A good one.

You can see in the before photo exactly what we were dealing with. Big open staircase, great architecture, and a wall that gave absolutely nothing back. The space had potential sitting right there, unused.

The Challenge

Matching an existing stain is harder than people think. You're not just picking a color off a chip at the hardware store. Real wood takes stain differently depending on the species, the cut, even how the surface was prepped. We pre-stained close to 200 planks back at our warehouse before ever showing up on site.

That's the wood staged at the shop, light-toned slats laid out across the scaffold rack before staining. We had what we thought was the right match. We were wrong.

We got to the house, held the boards up against the existing wall, and the color was off. Not a little off. Noticeably off. The kind of difference you see across a room in natural light.

We loaded everything back up, brought it all back to the warehouse, and ran every single board through the planer. Took the surface down, opened the grain back up, and restained with a formula that hit a lot closer to what was already on the wall. That's just how we do things. You don't install a color mismatch and hope nobody notices.

The Build

The staircase wall runs two full stories. You can't reach the top of it with a ladder leaning off a step. We brought in a rolling scaffold tower, set it up inside the stairwell, and worked in sections from the bottom up.

Here's what the wall looked like before the first board went up. Blank drywall, a single reference slat leaned against it, stairs protected under drop cloth. Clean slate, nothing on it yet.

And here the scaffold is positioned mid-install, with the lower section of slats already locked in. You can see the warm walnut tone starting to claim the wall. The height of this space is real. We're working two stories up inside a stairwell, with a railing on one side and a window on the other.

The crew working both levels simultaneously. One up on the scaffold platform, one on the ground feeding boards. Every slat runs vertical, tight spacing, consistent reveal between each one. When you're dealing with nearly 200 individual pieces, the spacing discipline has to hold from the first board to the last. Any drift compounds over the full height of the wall.

Here the wall is about three-quarters done. The warm cedar tone is filling in fast, and you can already feel how much weight it adds to the space. Not visual clutter. Warmth. Depth. Something worth walking past every day.

The Result

Floor to ceiling. Wall to wall. The slat accent wall now runs the full height of the staircase on both floors, matching the existing installation in the house close enough that they read as one cohesive design decision.

Looking up the staircase now, the wood fills the entire feature wall. The recessed lights above it pull the grain out even further. Against the white ceilings and the black steel railings, the warm brown tone does exactly what a great accent wall is supposed to do. It anchors the space and makes it feel intentional.

That's the upper section viewed from the second-floor landing. Top of the wall meets the ceiling plane clean, no gap, no visible backing. The slats read as part of the architecture, not something stuck on top of it.

From the second floor looking back toward the wall, you get the full scale of it. The light oak flooring, the wood slat wall, the vaulted ceiling. It all works together. The house finally feels like someone lives there and cared about every corner of it.

The wall also wraps into a secondary space off the landing. Same slats, same stain, same precision. Clean white baseboard at the floor, the wood running all the way up to the ceiling plane, a light switch integrated flat into the field with no visible disruption to the pattern.

And from the landing level looking straight on. The black horizontal rail in the foreground, the warm vertical slats behind it, the light oak floor below. Simple geometry. Maximum impact.

That's the finished state. No wasted wall. No empty space that makes a house feel like a spec build nobody loved. Just clean lines, real wood, and a stain color we went back and got right. Doing it right the first time. And when the first attempt isn't right, doing it over until it is. 🙏
